Planners ‘have let us down’
THE chairman of a leading community group fears developers will be allowed to build what they want under proposals being drawn up for government. Camden Civic Society chairman Martin Morton has said councillors should not be afraid to turn down developments, even if they are recommended by planning officials. He added: “Our planners, professional and lay, have constantly let us down.”
Mr Morton fears the Barker report – the basis of a government White Paper on redrawing planning rules – will help developers push through schemes to the detriment of the environment.
But Tory councillor Dawn Somper, Camden’s planning committee chairwoman, said: “I do not agree that developers get away with what they want. “I have been on the planning committee for 12 years and I think we have balanced the needs of developers with what residents want.”
