Councillor slams Regent’s Park plans
CONSERVATIVE councillor Rebecca Hossack’s hopes for a cross-party night under the stars to save Regen’ts Park have been rejected by Labour councillors. The gallery impresario is so incensed by plans put forward by Goals Soccer Centre and the Royal Parks Agency that she is calling for cross-party rebellion with an idea that members camp out on the site.
Goals want to fell 75 trees and transform five acres of meadowland to the north of the park into a nine-pitch football centre and bar-pavilion.
Cllr Hossack said: “I find it so abhorrent that they can build on this beautiful land and ride roughshod over the wishes of the community. There’s no other reason than greed. “We’ll have to find out what they are going to do with the bulldozers and strategically place ourselves in the way. Direct action is the only way to stop this.”
Labour’s Regent’s Park ward councillor Nash Ali said: “I would not be willing to camp out. “While I agree it’s necessary to generate space for the community, at the moment the majority of users are tourists. This will take more young people to Regent’s Park.”
