Women of the Year: Lianne Sanderson, Gemma Davison, Kelly Smith and Alex Scott toast the all-conquering Arsenal Ladies team
The Ladies are first again
FAB-FOUR Lianne Sanderson, Gemma Davison, Kelly Smith and Alex Scott were the toast of the town on Monday when they represented Arsenal Ladies at the prestigious Women of the Year 2007 Awards.
The all-conquering Gunners were the dominant force in women’s football last season as they became the first team outside Germany and Scandinavia to win the UEFA Women’s Cup.
Arsenal also won every game on their way to being crowned Premier League champions, as well as lifting both the FA Cup and the League Cup.
Established in 1955, the Women of the Year Awards brings together outstanding women from all ages, backgrounds and walks of life, in recognition of their individual achievements. And the Gunner girls more than deserve their place on the honours list after winning the quadruple, taking the club’s overall haul to 28 major trophies in 20 years, ensuring Arsenal Ladies’ place in sporting history.
• THE Gunners set up a League Cup quarter-final tie against Chelsea after storming to a resounding victory over Newquay on Sunday.
Rachel Yankey. Jayne Ludlow and Lianne Sanderson all netted hat-tricks as Arsenal Ladies took another step closer to retaining their crown. Lizzie Wicks and Faye Marsh were also on target as the north Londoners romped to an 11-1 win.
