Draconian measures cannot be the answer to problems on this estate
• EVENTS in Regent’s Park estate over the past year have shown that the need to provide a better future for young people has never been more pressing.
Groups of young people are motivated against each other, mainly because they have nothing else to do, and nowhere else to go. Residents have said they often feel intimidated and unsafe for the future of their children. In one incident last week, a group of youths tormented the residents of the council flats, where stones have been thrown towards the building. Young children were frightened by the gangs. This, as one resident said, is nothing new. But how do we stop this sort of thing from happening again?
I don’t believe that draconian measures such as Asbos are necessarily the answer.
The main problem is the lack of facilities for young people.
In particular, I think it’s unfortunate the way Camden Council cut the funding for youth provision. Parents, community leaders and councillors must find a solution before the matter gets out of hand. Mukul Hira
