Inquest highlights bricklaying defects
WHAT the jury said: “On the 18th January 2007, Saurav Antoni Kumar Ghai was collected from nursery at approx 1pm. Saurav Antoni Kumar Ghai and his nanny alighted the bus at around 1.15pm. They proceeded along Southampton Road. As they were passing by the rear of 183 Wendling estate, a brick panel from the boundary wall collapsed, causing multiple injuries to Saurav Antoni Kumar Ghai. Based on the evidence presented to us, these are the facts we find: • “There were inconsistencies in building surveyors’ reports. • “There was agreement between the surveyors that proprietary ties would have been preferable to EMLs (metal ties) and the amount of ties used were insufficient on a construction of this size. • “The mortar used was not of proper consistency and materials within the wall were not consistent with usual bricklaying materials.”
