‘Knifemen left shop customer close to death’ jury is told
A SHOP was left awash with blood after two hooded men launched a knife attack on a customer.
The two escaped, leaving their victim close to death.
But this week jurors at the Old Bailey were asked to identify one of them from a birthmark.
Kevin Williams, 28, a regular customer for 10 year’s at David’s newsagents in Queen’s Crescent, Kentish Town, was targeted on September 19 last year. “It was lunchtime and he popped into buy a few things. Soon afterwards he was aware of two men entering. They were wearing hooded tops and their faces were obscured,” said prosecutor Robin Miric.
Mr Williams dived behind the counter as he saw weapons being drawn and he pushed the shopkeeper’s daughter out of harms way. The owner of the premises and his wife, having a lunch break above, heard their daughter’s screams and were soon on the scene. “Mr Williams was repeatedly stabbed in an attack which lasted a couple of minutes. He suffered multiple wounds to the head, torso, buttocks and lower legs and was taken to the Royal Free Hospital where he underwent major surgery,” Mr Miric told the court.
The assailants split up and ran in opposite directions. Two knives were later recovered but there were no fingerprints or DNA clues.
Aaron Archer Williams, 28, no relation to the victim, formerly of Somers Town and now of King’s Norton, Birmingham, who denies attempted murder.
The victim said he had little recollection of the incident and he gave no indication of a motive.
Four CCTV cameras in the shop captured the attackers bending over Mr Williams. “The outer clothing of one of them rides up exposing his lower back and top of his buttocks,” said Mr Miric. Two expert prosecution witnesses claimed that a birthmark which Aaron Williams has is a match for one on the knifeman. But defence counsel Sam Stein fiercely challenges these claims.
The trial continues.
