‘Family’ fortunes: Gunners top

Striker hails team spirit as Arsenal record latest win to continue title charge

STRIKER Emmanuel Adebayor became the latest player to pay tribute to the spirit within the Gunners’ squad after vowing that the Arsenal “family” will return from the latest international break more confident than ever.
The Togolese forward scored Arsenal’s 1,000th goal in the Premier League on Monday when they beat Reading 3-1 at the Madejski Stadium to leapfrog Manchester United at the top of the table.
Adebayor is convinced that the result, along with the talented youngsters emerging within the Arsenal ranks, will keep the north Londoners ahead of their chasing rivals.
“We wanted to stay ahead of Manchester United and show them we are strong,” he told the club’s official website, Arsenal.com.
“Of course, it is a long title race, but we are very happy with how things are going.
“It is very important to be top going into the international break – it gives us a lot of confidence. We are playing really good football and there is a great feeling in the team. We are like a family.
“We believe the squad is strong – you can see in the Carling Cup and against Slavia Prague. All the young players can come in and do a good job.
“That is important because there are a lot of games coming up and you need all your players.”
Having failed to find the back of the net in his previous eight games, Adebayor admitted: “I had not scored for a while and, yes, that was on my mind. As a striker it is important to score.
“However, the most important thing was to do a good job and win the game – and to be back at the top is great as well.”
