Volunteers add a splash of colour to royal free’s playroom

MORE than 40 volunteers dusted off their boiler suits and got out their paint brushes on Sunday to help give a makeover to the children’s playroom at the Royal Free Hospital.
Volunteers young and old mucked in to transform the out-of-love room into a colourful playroom brimming with toys and books to keep even the most boisterous ankle-biters occupied.
The event was organised by the Jewish Community Centre for London and was one of a series of London-wide events for Mitzvah Day – a day of volunteering that included a cultural exchange with Darfuri refugees in Primrose Hill and a tour of care homes by a 20-strong choir.
Honing their painting and decorating talents on the third annual Mitzvah day were councillors Andrew Marshall and Syed Hoque.
Dame Julia Neuberger, a member of the House of Lords, who lent a hand with the hospital makeover, said the day was a triumph. She said: “Everyone mucked in and it brought out our artistic talents, although I was found a little wanting in that department. It was somewhat chaotic but the room is looking great and will be a credit to the hospital.”
