Champion for cyclists

• YOU have reported the appointment of Councillor Paul Braithwaite as Camden’s Cycling Champion – or was it czar? (‘Cycling champ’ St Pancras blast, November 22.)
His welcome start on this mission coincided with the concern of several cyclists who felt that Camden had not been helpful in threatening to cut off and remove cycles locked to a railing outside the Oasis Sports Centre.
Now, through the work of councillors Alexis Rowell and Paul Braithwaite we hear that Camden has agreed to remove the notice, so we can now lock cycles to the railing. We are grateful to the councillors and to Street Services for agreeing on what seems a common-sense resolution. Any child or adult passing by on the pavement would have to be careful not to impale themselves not just on one or more stationary cycles (not what one would normally count as a hazard) but also on various items of “street furniture”.
We hope the Cycling Champion will win other improvements that can readily be implemented – such as eye-level traffic lights to supplement higher ones which are often hard to see in glare. He could also work for better road surfaces (without the potholes which can bring down a cyclist, or force one to swerve, which might cause a much worse accident).
