Main line pollution
• THE removal of the last remnants of the steam engine age has been washed off
St Pancras station, the soot and grime a thing of the past. Within the station people are forbidden to smoke tobacco – danger to health they say.
It’s a pity then that people waiting for the Midlands services are wreathed in emissions from the new engines there.
Clouds of this pollutant waft over the nearby housing.
It must affect the health of the railway staff, too, as they are exposed to it all day. There is similar pollution in the King’s Cross main line station.
It is time for the railway authority to clean up its act and show as much concern for passengers’ lungs as they have for the fabric of St Pancras station. RJ CASEY
