NEWS IN BRIEF
Warning for terrapin man
HEATH park staff caught a man dumping four terrapins in the Highgate ponds – just as they were implementing a scheme to take the reptiles to an animal sanctuary. The man was caught in August and received a warning. His unwanted pets, which would have joined the estimated 130 terrapins living on the Heath, were given to the sanctuary.
Drinkers flee pub smoke
LUNCH-time drinkers had to abandon their pints on Saturday when a fire broke out at Quinn’s in Camden Town.
A glass washing machine burst into flames and filled the pub with smoke. Two fire engines were called to the blaze, which caused minor damage to the bar area.
Makeover on the Heath
THE busiest route across Hampstead Heath is set for a makeover.
The path running from Parliament Hill fields to the footbridge in Savernake Road, used by up to 20,000 people each week, has been earmarked for improvements, including removal of fences by the café and along the edge of the cricket enclosure.
Kids wishing on a tree
A TREE of children’s wishes has been “planted” in the O2 Centre in Finchley Road.
Schoolchildren were asked to write down what they most desired in the festive season. Answers will be displayed on the “Christmas tree of wishes” until the new year.
