Painter’s former lovers
are united
THE atmosphere at the Novas Gallery in Parkway on Thursday could have pitched anywhere between family and frosty when at least four of the former lovers of painter Robert Lenkiewicz came face to face with one another and their offspring.
Instead, to the relief of the 100-plus guests at the private view of At The Edge, the controversial artist’s paramours got on famously.
The families were reunited in front of the enormous Lenkiewicz painting Death Bed, which shows the artist drawing his final breath, surrounded by some of the women he had loved, of which there were many.
It comes from a series of paintings Lenkiewicz produced on the subject of death – he even went so far as to fake his own to try to understand it better.
The exhibition was curated by Annie Hill-Smith, a former Lenkiewicz muse.
• At The Edge: works by Robert Lenkiewicz exhibition is at the Novas Gallery,
73 Parkway, Camden Town, until January 25.
