South End Green lit up for Christmas
On Friday, the quiet murmur of the South End Green fountain was drowned out by the happy cries of Christmas carols, crowds and councillors, with the turning on of the area’s festive lights.
The Hampstead enclave’s glitter was kindly provided by a flick of the switch by Gospel Oak councillor Lulu Mitchell and Councillor Chris Knight of Hampstead Town ward while choirs from Hampstead Hill School and Gospel Oak Methodist Church, both in fine voice, provided the musical accompaniment.
Pam Gilby, chairwoman of the South End Green Association, praised the local traders’ response to the best-decorated window competition. The winners, who each got a bottle of champagne, were the Beetroot Deli in Fleet Road, Animal Crackers, Susan Wainwright and Belsize Stationers.
