Martin Power swings at the stooping Napa
Bantam bout lacks full Power
BOXING ROUND-UP with STEVE BARNETT
MARTIN Power failed in his bid to reclaim the British Bantamweight title on Friday when he was beaten on points by Ian Napa at the Newham Leisure Centre in east London.
Despite being six inches shorter than Power and having a four inch reach deficit, ‘Dappa’ Napa put in a confident display as he clinched a unanimous decision – with two judges awarding the champion the fight 117-111, and the third scoring the contest 117-112.
It was the perfect revenge for Napa, who was controversially beaten on points when the two memorably clashed for the British title two years ago at the York Hall in Bethnal Green.
This time around, Napa gradually subdued Power, landing the big shots to the head and body.
The pair raised their game to another level in the penultimate round and the 12th was a classic as Napa and Power stood toe-to-toe in the challenger’s corner in a blistering finale.
The result will come as a bitter blow for Power, who lives in Kentish Town, after he relinquished the title earlier this year as he set his sights on a Commonwealth and possible world title shot.
Power has now lost his last three fights, having been beaten twice by Tshifhiwa Munyai.
Heavyweight champ loses title on points
LONDON Champion Richard McCauley was controversially beaten on points on Saturday when he took on John Watkins in the quarter-finals of the England Novice Championships. The St Pancras heavyweight looked to have done enough to win the decision as he battled his way through three tough two-minutes round at the Five Star Amateur Boxing Club in Romford.
But on the sound of the final bell, Richard, 22, was astonished to see Watkins’ hand raised in victory.
There was better news for club mate Alan Higgins, who stepped between the ropes at the Lion Boxing Club in Islington on Sunday for a special open show.
He sealed a unanimous points win over Battersea’s Michael McPhearson.
