Academy good news
• THE confirmation of University College London as sponsor for Camden’s new academy is brilliant news for the future of education in the borough.
The new school will bring 900 much-needed school places to the borough for 11 to 16-year-olds plus an extra 250 sixth-form places.
Students of the future will benefit from learning in a centre of excellence for the teaching of maths and science and the school will have an additional focus on global citizenship and languages.
Alongside building the new school and brand-new co-located special school our plans also mean a massive £170 million investment in our existing secondary schools and pupil referral units. Our Building Schools for the Future plans also mean 300 new school places at an expanded South Camden Community School.
We heard from so many parents and others interested in education in Camden throughout our consultation and the strong message coming through was the need for all our schools to embrace inclusion and to offer an equal opportunity for pupils to develop their potential. By working with UCL we can build on this vision by creating a new secular school which places no barriers to children because of their background or religious beliefs and which has an admissions system which is fair and inclusive.
The new school won’t be selective because UCL is committed to developing an admissions policy which is as fair as possible for all pupils who want to attend the academy. It is also committed to working within Camden’s existing family of schools, and will fully collaborate with others over the development of the curriculum for the 14-19 age group.
All of Camden Council’s decisions around our BSF programme have been taken openly by the executive under close scrutiny and in accordance with agreed procedures. These are in place to ensure our decisions are efficient, transparent and accountable to local people. The decisions made by the executive on November 21 were taken in the best interests of all Camden’s children and young people and it is for their benefit that we are keen and ready to move forward without delay to implement these decisions.
