Frank Barnes rethink after bungled ruling
A SCHOOL for deaf children could be joined to a Primrose Hill primary school to save it from being turfed out of the borough.
Councillors said last night (Wednesday) that they are considering building a new unit for Frank Barnes School for deaf children in the former caretaker’s house at Primrose Hill School in Princess Road.
Supporters of Frank Barnes are against merging with Blanche Neville in Muswell Hill when the school is evicted from its current site in Swiss Cottage to make way for a new city academy.
The rescue package came as it emerged that bungling council officials had mistakenly ruled that the entire Primrose Hill School site was listed and that the grounds could not be redeveloped.
Liberal Democrat councillor Alexis Rowell said: “The only things that are listed are Primrose Hill school itself and the front wall adjoining the Princess Road pavement. It could be argued by conservationists that the caretaker’s house is part of the listed estate.”
Mike Katz, a governor at Frank Barnes, said: “It is a council climbdown over Frank Barnes.”
Three weeks ago more than 150 people marched to the Town Hall to protest against the closure of Frank Barnes – including designer and actress Sadie Frost, who has a nephew at the school. |
