Awards salute CNJ’s coverage of asylum seekers

MAYOR of London Ken Livingstone and human rights campaigner Shami Chakrabarti have commended the Camden New Journal for its “rehumanising” coverage of refugees and asylum seekers.
New Journal reporter Simon Wroe was highly commended at the Reporting Asylum press awards presentation at City Hall last week. The awards recognise fair and balanced coverage of sensitive immigration issues.
The commended article told the story of foster mother Ghenet Tewolde, a refugee who fled a violent civil war in Eritrea and now looks after children in need from all over the world.
Ms Chakrabarti, director of pressure group Liberty, said: “There are hawks and doves everywhere – that is my experience in police or media. When you tell the real story of the individual that’s when you do your best work.
“It is rehumanising people. Do we believe in the inherent dignity of the human being? There is no greater test of one’s attitude as to how we feel about the outsider.”
Mr Livingstone added: “The national media is fuelled by the doom-and-gloom cult but we have a real responsibility to assist those driven from their homes by war and famine.”
