Eviction and the season of goodwill
• THE report (Bailiffs give retired couple half an hour to quit £700,000 home, November 29) was disturbing.
They are reported as owing Camden Council £5,500 for compulsory work carried out after neighbours complained about the property.
Costs have increased that sum to £36,000.
Collectively we residents of the borough are responsible for the drastic action taken by officials on our behalf.
That money due must be collected is understood.
But surely, given the age of the couple, a charge could be levied on the property to be paid either when the persons are deceased or when they choose to sell their own house.
Then there is the Court of Protection, which could act in the best interest of the debtors should they be frail or infirm.
What cannot be acceptable is that two people aged 75 are treated in this callous manner.
Can we enjoy the season of goodwill with this on our conscience?
