No ‘time’ called on boozing
DEMANDS by residents in night-life hotspots for shorter boozing hours were rejected by councillors setting Camden’s new licensing policy.
Residents from the Charlotte Street and Covent Garden associations sent deputations to the Town Hall to argue that the explosion in pavement drinking culture over recent years had combined with the effects of the smoking ban to make streets in Fitzrovia and the West End increasingly raucous.
Speakers Clive Henderson and David Kaner called on councillors to make a change to the new policy, introducing a presumption to refuse applications by licensees to extend their hours – a measure already in place in Westminster.
The Charlotte Street Association’s Mr Henderson said: “There is already an issue – people are definitely standing outside and drinking.”
The council’s environment chief Councillor Mike Greene agreed that “smoke-free legislation has made things more difficult” but said Camden’s lawyers would not support the changes demanded.
