Delay for family of fall victim

THE family of brain damage victim Ryan St George – starved of oxygen following a fall while an inmate in Brixton Prison – are facing the latest delay in their long quest for justice.
Mr St George, who was serving time for shoplifting, was given the Last Rites more than 10 years ago as he lay close to death.
In October, at the end of a harrowing five-day High Court hearing, Mr Justice MacKay ruled in the 39-year-old’s favour and found the prison medical staff at fault.
The Home Office defended the negligence action brought against them. The judge refused permission then for them to appeal. But he extended the time for a renewed application to December 7.
On the deadline the Treasury Solicitor, on behalf of the Home Office, lodged an appeal, expected to be heard sometime in the new Year.
Ryan’s father, David St George, said “The defendants – the Home Office – claim that the judge erred on three major points. Of course we cannot accept that view. He was completely impartial and came to his decision in our favour after evaluating all the testimony presented by both sides.
“It’s another setback, but we’re patient and confident that appeal judges will come out on our side. I believe the Home Office are clutching at straws with this latest move.”
Ryan now lives with his aunt in Castlehaven Road.
