New bid to revive Kenwood concerts
KENWOOD concerts could be back next summer after English Heritage applied for permission to stage a season of eight shows.
The conservation body, in conjunction with promoters IMG, has asked Camden Council for permission to allow 8,000 ticket-holders into the grounds of Kenwood for nine-and-a-half weeks between June and August in 2008. In a compromise aimed at placating objectors, English Heritage has asked for permission to stage just one firework display rather than seven.
The plans would see the stage moved from its traditional spot on a clearing behind the Thousand Pound pond to a new area on the rolling lawns of the house.
English Heritage’s visitor operations director for London, Rebecca Kane, said: “Following extensive consultation, we are optimistic that we have addressed the key concerns about noise levels and the visual impact of the floating stage on the landscape.”
The Heath and Hampstead Society’s Jeremy Wright said: “It is unfortunate that it has been put in just before Christmas so people will not have the opportunity to comment. We do welcome a reduction to the numbers of people, and a reduction in the number of firework displays.”
Previous plans had been for a licence for 10,000 people.
The society’s chairman Tony Hillier said he would like to see the concerts run next year as a trial for future events.
He said: “The licence should be granted for just one summer so we can see what the impact is on the natural environment.”
