Camden New Journal - Letters to the Editor
Published: 3 January 2008

Scheme no safeguard against terror

• THERE'S little doubt we’re about to suffer a very painful economic downturn in the coming year.
Even Gordon Brown, who created the problem as Chancellor by encouraging runaway house price inflation through cheap money and remortgaging to the point that our children now can’t even contemplate buying a home, has admitted as much in his New Year message.
And yet this Government is still wedded to its dreadful plan for identity cards, at a cost on several billions of pounds.
And for what?
Can anyone seriously believe it would act as a safeguard against terrorism – the reason given for its introduction?
This Government has shown in the recent multiple scandals of lost records that it is simply incapable of secure storage of sensitive data on us all.
I urge New Journal readers to protest against the authoritarian, irrelevant and profligate proposal for national identity cards.
CLLR PAUL BRAITHWAITE
Liberal Democrat,
Cantelowes ward
