Cobden seek to keep cup and league double alive

Cup fever grips Sunday League as season kicks off again

THE Camden Sunday League will be gripped by cup fever this weekend when the action returns to Hackney Marshes following a deserved winter break.
Division One leaders Cobden Athletic will be looking to continue their quest to clinch a league and cup double when they take on AFC Brasenose in the semi-finals of the Senior Cup.
The two teams met in a dress rehearsal of their final-four encounter just before Christmas, with Cobden securing valuable league points with an impressive 3-1 victory. Man of the match Kaleb King opened the scoring when he collected the ball midway in the opponents’ half before outpacing the Brasenose defence and slotting his shot past the onrushing keeper.
Brasenose pulled the scores level with a speculative 30-yard effort, but Cobden restored their advantage when Ajmul Khan fired home from close range following a desperate goalmouth scramble.
King made the points safe in the final 15 minutes when he scored his second of the game with a stunning drive from the edge of the penalty area.
Reddot will face Archway Allstars in the other Senior Cup semi-final.
High-flying Phoenix, who are sitting third in the Division One table, will enjoy an extended two week break, with their next game not scheduled until January 20.
Phoenix ended their 2007 campaign in a blaze of glory as they powered their way to a 5-1 win over Os Lusos. Aaron Clarke opened the scoring from close range after James Cole’s initial shot was parried by the keeper. Os Lusos equalised but Brian Dunleavy quickly fired Phoenix back in front.
Man of the match Aron Kennedy came off the bench to add a third, before turning provider to twice set up Cole, who bagged a brace to take his personal tally to 16 goals for the season.
Teams will also turn out in force for the quarter-finals of the Junior Cup. The Constitution will be looking to continue their impressive winning streak when they take on the Surreal Madrid ‘D’ team. The Cons ended their year with a stunning 4-1 victory over Division Two leaders DOM. Billy Evans struck twice, while Dan Read and Ruben Malcom were also on target.
Other ties will see the Surreal Madrid ‘A’ team play River Fleet, CS Maritimo take on Desportivo and Hornsey face DOM.
