Patients made to pay for GP changes
• COUNCILLOR Alexis Rowell does serve his constituents well, contrary to what Mary O’Sullivan suggests (Letters, January 3). He holds a regular monthly surgery on the first Monday of the month at Antrim Grove library and does whatever he can to resolve the problems brought to him there.
But she is right to say we all need better access to GPs as well. By paying them more to see patients within 48 hours means the practice is now organised for maximum financial advantage, with no regard for the convenience of patients.
This has got to a point where no appointments are available for the day one phones up (because they were all taken the previous day) but only for the next day, and not a day more (except for people working full-time). In the scramble for those remaining places, all of them in turn are taken within a few minutes of the line opening.
Since it had nothing to loose, I don’t suppose my own practice much minded not receiving the annual Christmas card on this occasion.
