Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 17 January 2008

A truly inspirational politician

• I MET Roy Shaw in 1989 when he wrote a letter welcoming me as a Labour Party member and invited me to attend the then Grafton ward Labour group meeting.
It was Roy who greeted me with a smile on his face (which he always used to have).
Roy used to talk to me about politics and his passion to help resolve local issues is the reason why he did not want to be a parliamentarian.
Roy represented the area in which he lived for more than 50 years.
Roy inspired me to be a councillor and I felt very fortunate and privileged to be elected as a councillor with Roy in May 2006.
His sense of humour was a great asset as was his wise and formidable political brain. I will always remember the warmth and affection that Roy showed those who were around him.
The residents of Haverstock and Camden as a whole lost a passionate advocate and a real ambassador for local government. Roy was a unique and irreplaceable politician.
I would like to send condolences to Roy’s sister and her family and friends on behalf of the people of Haverstock and Gospel Oak ward who he loved and cared for.
Cllr Syed Hoque
Labour, Haverstock ward

• ON behalf of all Groundwork trustees and staff, past and present, we are deeply saddened to hear of Roy Shaw’s death.
Roy was one of the longest-serving trustees and played a pivotal role in helping to establish Groundwork in Camden some 14 years ago.
We work in partnership with local authorities, residents, local businesses and community groups to improve the quality of the inner-city environment, promote healthy living and regenerate neglected or underused land for social and economic benefit.
The trust benefited from Roy’s considerable experience and knowledge of Camden’s local communities. Roy was a firm believer in a local approach to getting things done.
He had a keen interest in environmental matters and generously donated his time to the trust for many years.
He remained an active Groundwork supporter, even when he stepped down from being a trustee.
