Gallas ready to take on Spurs
Gunners captain tells Wenger he’s ready for crucial north London derby
CLUB captain William Gallas has told manager Arsene Wenger he is happy to enter the fray when Arsenal fight for a Wembley place against Spurs on Tuesday night.
For once, the Gunners will be underdogs in a derby match with Tottenham as the two rivals fight out the second leg of their Carling Cup semi-final at White Hart Lane. The scores are tied at 1-1 after last week’s first match and Arsenal know that if they fail to score on enemy soil, they will go out.
Wenger rests his first team in the competition but on Tuesday he won’t be able to call on regulars Johan Djourou, who is injured, and Alex Song, who is currently with the Cameroon squad at the African Nations Cup.
Kolo Toure is also in Ghana with the Ivory Coast national team.
Gallas said on Saturday if he is called on to plug the gaps, he will be happy to play an extra game. “We will see what happens,” he said. “If I am needed in the game at Tottenham then of course I am ready to play. We are one squad here – if we win the Premier League this season, we would have done it as a squad. “Whether I play or not, I feel like part of the team.”
Tottenham might have put the tie beyond reach after dominating the first game with a full strength team.
Gallas said: “They could have made it 2-0 but they didn’t and we got the draw. What is good is that nothing is lost. The tie is still open and it’s up to us to win the game there. The way the game turned out means that psychologically we have a slight advantage when we go there. I’m sure we will be stronger for the return game, they will know that too. I know the boys are really determined to reach the final.”
