Hospital worker found dead in stairwell ‘was due to be evicted’

THE death of a 46-year-old woman, whose body was found in the stairwell of nurses’ accommodation in Bloomsbury, remains a mystery, a coroner ruled this week.
Detectives spent more than a year investigating how Helena Green came to be found with multiple injuries on a flight of stairs by the caretaker of University College London Hospital accommodation in Bonham Carter House, Gower Street, on New Year’s Day 2007. Police treated the death as suspicious.
Ms Green had resigned from her job at UCLH in 2005 on the day of an employment hearing into allegations of drunkenness, and was due to be evicted from the staff quarters in Gower Street at the time of her death, Detective Constable Simon Radcliffe told the inquest.
She had not been seen for 10 days before her body was found.
A pathologist’s report showed she had “multiple injuries consistent with a fall from a height onto a hard surface”.
On Thursday, St Pancras coroner Dr Andrew Reid recorded an open verdict.
He said: “She died as a result of multiple injuries but there is no direct eye-witness evidence as to how she sustained these injuries.... I’m satisfied on the detailed police evidence in the case that there are no suspicious circumstances [but], despite a thorough and detailed investigation, I am not able to reach a conclusion.”
