‘Apparent youth’ and a sign of ageism
• I FOUND it difficult to believe your headline (‘You were hopelessly out of your depth’ charge in bar row, January 24) about Councillor Fred Carver chairing a licensing meeting and granting a licence, with conditions attached, to the Snugg Bar, Marchmont Street.
No doubt the opinion of Kenneth Clements, a Marchmont Street resident whom you quoted as commenting on Fred’s “inexperience and apparent youth,” was coloured by his disappointment that Cllr Carver did not fully meet his wishes by simply refusing the bar a licence. It seems a great shame that when we find outstanding young people to take on public responsibilities, they should then be attacked on such simplistic and ageist assumptions as Mr Clements adopted.
