Phoenix fire title chase

Division One trophy hunt is blown wide open after a 3-2 thriller

PHOENIX blew the Division One title race wide open on Sunday with a thrilling 3-2 victory over rivals Cobden Athletic at Hackney Marshes.
Cobden took the lead midway through the first-half when Pat Jones scored from close range. But Phoenix hit back to take a half-time lead when Dean Syer bagged a brace.
Cobden levelled after the break when Jason Williams scored from the edge of the box following a well-weighted pass from Kieran Rielly. With just minutes left, Terry Rowland’s powerful free-kick was parried by keeper Martin Halpin, letting in Mark ‘Munchie’ Doyle to score the winner. Phoenix are now four points behind leaders Reddot with a game in hand, chasing four trophies this season.
Reddot leapfrogged Cobden with a nail-biting 5-4 win over Archway Allstars. An own-goal from captain Michael Birney gifted the Dots an early lead before Jason Medford doubled the advantage. Reddot ran riot with goals from Paul ‘Trigger’ Reid, Martin Lovejoy and Medford’s second giving them a 5-1 lead.
But Archway battled back and almost earned a point thanks to a James Birney double and strikes from Leigh Hartley and Danny Keohane.
Meanwhile AFC Shooters are the new league leaders in Division Three after they beat the Surreal Madrid ‘D’ team 4-2. On target with two apiece were Steve Comber and Joe Wilh.
