It’s a dirty job as Harriers overcome mud

QUICK quartet Esther Evans, Anna McCutcheon, Astrid Wingler and Jo Carritt secured valuable points for the Highgate Harriers on Saturday in the South of England Cross-Country Championships, which were held on a muddy Parliament Hill Fields.
Evans led the Highgate team home as she crossed the line in 34mins, 31secs to take 12th place. McCutcheon, Wingler and Carritt helped Highgate secure fifth place overall.
Rival club London Heathside were also out in force with Miranda Stephens finishing in 39mins, 8secs to take 90th place. Team-mates Caroline White, Fiona Holland, Jackie Watt and Susie Brighton also all ran well as Heathside finished 27th.
Highgate’s men ran the traditional distance of nine miles in the senior championships, with more than 1,200 athletes turning out. Alistair Lindsay, Nick Gold, Andrew Aitken, Dan Higgins, Ryan McKinley and Thierry Lebreton all recorded good times as Highgate finished in 16th place out of 62 clubs.
Martin Potter led the charge for Heathside men’s team as he crossed the line in 120th place in 55mins, 31secs. Richard Browne and Paul Lemmon also finished well as the Heathside ‘A’ team ended the afternoon in 17th place overall, while their ‘B’ team took 33rd spot.
In the junior ranks, Saningo Martyn came 22nd out of 101 finishers in the Under-20s race with a time of 31.18. Club-mate Lawrence Matthewman was 80th in 34.37. 
In the Under-17s category William Laing was 111th in 26.18, while brother George finished 174th with a time of 22.06 in the Under-15s competition.
Elsewhere Samara Williams finished 30th out of 188 runners in the Under-15s girls race.
London Heathside also enjoyed a series of impressive results in the junior competition, with Josh Lawlor and Alex Beattie-Child finishing in 175th and 217th place respectively in the boys’ Under-15s competition.
Club-mate Ella Waldman was in exceptional form as she finished 19th out of 120 finishers in the Under-17s women’s race with a time of 22mins, 20secs.

• EUROPEAN champion Simeon Williamson recorded a podium finish in the Norwich Union International Indoors meet, which was held in Glasgow on Saturday. Running for the Great Britain team, the Highgate Harrier completed the 60m race in 6.65 seconds to take second place.
