Baby death caused by asthmatic attack

AN asthmatic baby died suddenly while playing games with a relative after eating confectionery, St Pancras Coroner’s Court heard.
Coroner Dr Andrew Reid ruled last Thursday that 15-month-old Mariam Abdul-Kadir, who lived with her family in Harrigton Square, Camden Town, died on August 14 last year from an anaphylactic shock – a severe asthma attack – as a result of an allergic response to something she ate.
Pathologist Dr Liina Liho of Royal London Hospital in east London said outside the court that the hospital had seen only about five such cases in the past five years.
Dr Liho said: “The children were playing together and the older child was eating something and the baby (Mariam) wanted some. After the baby collapsed the older child came out saying the baby had breathing problems. She was not moving and taking occasional gasps.”
Baby Mariam was allergic to several foods: peanuts, chocolate and cakes.
Dr Liho added: “Some persons die after the first attack, some people die after hundreds. In this case the child was definitely having some problems for quite some time. It happens in seconds so you can’t do anything if the patient doesn’t get help straight away.”
Verdict: Natural causes.
