Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 21 February 2008

Why naming and shaming young people is not the answer

With regard to the remarks made by Simon Horvat-Marcovic, our chairman, (‘Name and shame youths’ plea puts politicians on spot, February 7) we should all evolve the process of helping our youth to integrate and help to enjoy adult life with dignity, courage, love, respect and not to be treated differently.
It’s not the right approach to be naming and shaming youths or to release their photos into the public domain...
Naming and shaming could only push youths to lose their self-esteem and confidence for later adult life.
Do we really want to tackle the true issues affecting our youth nowadays?
In order to do so we must address the underlying causes and multi-agencies must engage with youth as well as their parents.
Youths need understanding and facilities where creative achievement and safety is the paramount issue.
We need to discuss the fundamental issues – not just related to youths. The need is to readdress questions of morality, etiquette and social values.
