Bring these premises back into use
• I was heartened to see our Camden Town markets vibrant and active this last weekend.
I would like to record my gratitude to council officers, and fire and police teams, and to my fellow councillors Libby Campbell and Pat Callaghan, for everyone’s work tackling the blaze and its aftermath.
I am glad to say the council has acted with specially commissioned adverts to ensure the message that Camden Town is still open for business has gone out, and with extra health and safety reminders going out to market traders, as well as officers considering any overall lessons to be learned.
I would also thank Camden Town Unlimited for their valuable work on this.
Our markets today are central to Camden Town’s unique diverse character – alongside our performance venues like the Roundhouse, and our many other creative and media businesses, they are vital to our special identity.
It is very important that we rescue this site, and try to save these fire-damaged premises and get them back into use as soon as we can.
I would also use this opportunity to note the consideration going on in parallel about how we safeguard and build on what Camden Town has to offer, over and above what our markets do so well – and to encourage readers to think what in addition we might be offering local residents and visitors.
Our area forum will be discussing this issue.
