Fight for branches
• CAMDEN'S Green councillors strongly oppose the closure of Highgate post office as well as Camden’s other local post offices which have been selected for possible closure.
We urge all residents to respond to the Post Office consultation due to close on April 2 to oppose this.
Three key reasons make it vital to act now. First, post offices are vital to our high streets. They increase footfall in an area and can make all the difference to whether other local shops can stay open or must close. A study in Manchester shows that for every £10 of income for a post office, they generate £16.20 in goods and services.
Secondly, keeping our post offices local limits the unnecessary journeys that otherwise need to be made and is an essential part of planning for more environmentally-friendly communities.
Thirdly, we must not forget the importance of ensuring that those who do not have bank accounts or otherwise rely on post offices for their finances are able to continue to do so.
While other parties have embraced the privatisation agenda that has undermined our post offices, it is the Green Party that has opposed such moves. Greens have campaigned to show that the free market is not the way to provide these vital public services which provide an anchor to high streets.
