Harry is back from France to fire Swiss Cottage to victory
SWIM stars from Camden Swiss Cottage celebrated a series of brilliant results at the opening weekend of the Middlesex County Age Groups in Enfield.
Youngster Harry Needs returned from an intense half-term training course in France to capture gold in all four 50m sprints, winning the backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle.
The talented 15-year-old also helped lead the boys’ 14-15 relay teams to double victory, joining forces with team-mates Iao Pok Wong, Bogac Ayhan, Felix Samuels and Callum McDougall to win the medley and freestyle events.
In the 17-plus age group, Ed Walsh won double gold on back and breaststroke, silver on fly and bronze on freestyle. Walsh also contributed to a double bronze success in the 16 and over relays, finishing third alongside club mates John Rittenhouse, Metin Ayhan, Alex Mackay and Josh Tomas-Merrills in both the medley and the freestyle races.
The marvellous Mackay put in one of the most impressive performances of the weekend as he recorded a personal best time on the way to winning the 800m freestyle. He also won double silver in 50m back and breaststroke and a bronze in the 50m fly. There was double delight for Alex Burgess, who won gold in both the boys’ 800m and 1500m freestyle.
Alex was just as impressive over the shorter distances, winning bronze in the 50m backstroke, and helping team-mates Oliver Wilkinson, Alex Peake and Aron Barta clinch bronze in the 12-13 boys’ medley relay. Peake also went on to win the boys 12 years 50m breaststroke and take silver on fly.
The medals continued with Sarah Taylor-Reid (pictured) collecting gold in the 50m breaststroke, before leading the girls 12-13 medley relay team to bronze with Sophie Rittenhouse, Isa Ouwehand and Tamsin McKinnon.
Anaconda record-breakers show
RECORD breaker Dominic McLoughlin established his credentials as the fastest 12-year-old in the county at the weekend when he won gold for Anaconda Swimming Club at the Middlesex Sprint Championships.
The young speedster touched home first in the 50m front crawl in the super fast time of 28.79, beating his nearest rival by a clear half-a-second. Dominic also went on to set a new Anaconda club record of 33.54 on his way to clinching bronze in the 50m butterfly.
Anaconda’s other star performer was nine-year-old Fred Cornwall. Competing in his first Middlesex Championships, the talented youngster returned with two silver medals after finishing second in the 50m front crawl and the 50m butterfly.
Meanwhile the Under-12s squad were celebrating after winning the Eric Pinwell Trophy. The 32 swimmers performed brilliantly in the relay-based tourney, setting five club records and winning 15 out of 29 events.
The highlight of the gala were the relay swims of 12-year-olds Andrew Boadi, Joe Grubb, Dominic McLoughlin and Padraig Lynch, who re-wrote club record books to win the 100m front crawl and the 100m medley. |
