Smokers have rights
• ACCORDING to Professor Julian LeGrand, chairman of Health England, forcing smokers to apply for a £10 permit to buy cigarettes could help people to quit, a proposal sent to Lord Darzi.
Smokers are already facing record levels of taxation; landlords of pubs and cafes the expense of awnings and heaters against loss of takings; the breakdown of rural communities; working men’s clubs; and the social isolation of “oldies” in winter.
Perhaps by giving up, I may have added perhaps five years to my life span but, at 81, do I really want to live longer in a world full of self-righteous health police anyway?
What about some “compassion” for lifelong smokers over 65 in practical terms to redress the balance?
