Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 6 March 2008

This is vile injustice

• CAMDEN’S Liberal Democrat/ Tory compact now makes decisions affecting the lives of the most vulnerable of its residents without without fear of retribution or censure.
First it sent in its consultants to bully, threaten and intimidate disabled and elderly residents into revealing their most personal financial details.
Then they used the cruellest blackmail by demanding immoral and unjustifiable amounts of money in return for not withdrawing essential care services.
They then farmed out the Careline call service, upon which many lone people depend, to a call centre in Kent; this to save money rather than keep the service local.
Having achieved the saving, they followed this by a decision, with no pretence of consultation, by the council’s executive to raise the Careline charge to £4.60 per week, for a valuable back-up service that is, nonetheless, rarely used.
Have no doubt that those who have relied on personal care and 24-hour emergency services are now suffering breakdowns and being forced, through economic hardship, to give up some or all of these lifelines.
Be equally sure that this is exactly what your cynical and commercially warped council want; to get more money while providing a lesser service.
There is a vile injustice being perpetrated on the people of Camden when councillors, abetted by highly paid officers, artificially keep the cost of services low for those with the loudest voices and the fattest wallets while screwing every last penny from those who have neither the energy nor means to resist.
Surely Camdenites have more conscience than to allow these arrogant politicos to buy their votes with the pennies they steal from the poor.
If a small rise in council tax will assure the elderly and disabled of a secure and peaceful life, then tell your local councillor in no uncertain terms that their anti-social behaviour will not do and that you want the Caring to come back into Camden.
