I Wasteful operation
• WHAT has happened to democracy, local accountability, prudent financial management and treasuring our heritage?
Without telling, let alone consulting their patients, doctors at the Adelaide Road medical practice, a surgery recently refurbished at a cost of over £1million, are finalising with Camden the details of a planning application to destroy the surgery and adjacent nature reserve by building a polyclinic and tower block on the newly enlarged site.
Neither the local health authority, the council nor the GPs have asked patients whether they want a polyclinic. How can the health authority justify jettisoning a £1m-plus investment when the surgery is so close to the Royal Free hospital which, with greater expertise, provides the same treatments as a polyclinic? Wouldn’t money be better spent on increasing staffing and therefore accessibility at the hospital?
If allowed, this is the second major encroachment and fragmentation of the Adelaide Road nature reserve and a slap in the face for the many volunteers who have laboured to maintain a continuous wildlife haven. It is also a tragic degradation of our national heritage.
