Spurs crash out of Cup
UEFA Cup
PSV Eindhoven 0
Tottenham 1
(PSV win 6-5 on penalties)
SPURS’ European adventures ended in Holland last night (Wednesday) when PSV Eindhoven held their nerve to win the tie on penalties. The visitors strode on to the Philips stadium pitch with the strains of Tina Turner’s Simply the Best ringing in their ears – but the shoot-out was anything but.
Tottenham had dominated the first half with skipper Ledley King and Tom Huddlestone coming close.
With the clock ticking down in a scrappy second period, PSV’s valuable away win at White Hart Lane last week looked set to carry them through.
Dimitar Berbatov’s 80th-minute volley forced extra time, but with both sides looking leg weary, penalties were inevitable.
Paul Robinson pulled out all the stops to save at the outset, but it counted for nothing once first Jermaine Jenas and Pascal Chimbonda missed.
