Smoked on
• EILEEN Earnshaw says: “Perhaps, by giving up, I may have added perhaps five years to my life span but, at 81, do I really want to?” (Smokers have rights, March 6).
This misses the point: it is not how smoking affects those who have chosen to smoke; it is how it affects those of us who have not chosen to smoke but have it imposed on us anyway without our consent even being asked let alone obtained. The smoking ban has helped with this to a certain extent but it applies only to indoor public places, which customers (if not staff) have the option of avoiding, whereas no one can avoid being smoked on in the street.
