Beach Boys star brings summer sounds back to Kenwood
GOOD Vibrations will roll out across Hampstead Heath this summer when Beach Boys’ legend Brian Wilson opens the Kenwood House concert season. He will appear on the last Saturday in June – as long as English Heritage gets planning permission for a massive new stage.
Wilson will be joined on a summer-long bill by singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright and Cuban singer Omara Portuondo, backed by world music veterans the Buena Vista Social Club.
For classical music lovers, there will be the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and singer Katherine Jenkins.
Other performers include jazz diva Diana Krall, opera singer Lesley Garrett and West End star Michael Ball.
Rebecca Milton, from English Heritage, said the star-filled line-up would answer critics who complained that tribute acts were “dumbing down’ the season.
She said: “It will appeal to a lot of people. We have avoided the Dirty Dancing-style shows that many people locally were not keen on. It is such a great venue that you can really aim high with the people you get in.”
Last year, the programme was cancelled after councillors backed residents living near the Heath who complained that concerts had become too large and noisy.
Conservative councillor Mike Greene said: “Personally, I am a big fan of the Beach Boys, so I am looking forward to it. “I do not think it is reasonable for people to insist it is highbrow. To have a combination of different music allows the concerts to get a good following.”
