St Mary’s School pupils meet triple jump olympian Jonathan Edwards.
World champions bring kids closer to their Olympic dreams
OLYMPIANS Jonathan Edwards and Ian Rose stunned youngsters on Wednesday when they turned out to take part in the Sportshall Athletics Championships at the Sobell Leisure Centre in Holloway. Current world record triple jumper Edwards, and Paralympic Judo champion Rose spoke to budding young athletes about their experiences within their respective sports and signed autographs, before watching the primary school pupils battle it out in the fifth annual Sportshall Championships.
Organised by the School Sport Co-ordinator programme, more than 300 children from 24 primary schools took part in various athletics events, ranging from soft javelin and vertical jump in the field to relays and obstacle track races.
After a day of thrilling action, Duncombe Primary School in Sussex Way, Upper Holloway, were crowned overall champions and will now represent Islington at the Mini Youth Games in June.
