They gave their lives
• I DO wish you would not so generalise in your editorial and articles.
In your Comment (March 27) editorial you refer to east Europeans, “some of whom come from countries that fought with Hitler against this country”, coming here unhindered while those “from the Commonwealth whose soldiers fought alongside ours in the war are banned”.
I and all British people warmly applaud the services of the Gurkhas and the thousands of Commonwealth soldiers who fought against the enemy but your comments also gravely insult the memories of thousands of Polish soldiers who came here in 1939 and fought side by side with the British troops – groups such as General Wladyslaw Anders’s Free Polish Brigade and the Polish Air Force; the soldiers from Czechoslovakia who fought all the way against Germany from 1939-1945 despite British foreign policy betraying a vast part of their country to the Germans in 1938; those from other countries occupied by the German forces.
I lived in Crieff in Scotland and as a child met Polish troops based in my town who wept by my side at the memories of their own children trapped under German occupation.
We should never ignore so blatantly and arbitarily those from eastern Europe who fought and gave their lives to be our partners in World War II.
