Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 3 April 2008

Keeping a tax pledge

EXACTLY a year ago, the New Journal published a letter from me pointing out that the Lib Dem/Conservative administration had kept its 2006 local Camden election manifesto pledge, by keeping our part of council tax unchanged last year.
This, in contrast to Ken Livingstone having raised his London-wide element by more than inflation in every one of the previous six years.
In fact we’re all going to be paying heavily for his Olympic 2012 commitment for many years to come.
I write to make readers aware, at the start of the tax year, that Camden has again kept its manifesto promise to keep its council tax rises to below inflation. Camden’s council taxes will go up for the year we’re just beginning by just 2.5 per cent – far lower than the true cost of living increases that we’re all suffering and less than the majority of rises across the UK. Council tax rises hit the poorest families hardest.
CLLR PAUL BRAITHWAITE
Lib Dem, Cantelowes ward
