Gunners must score at Anfield
It’s make or break in Liverpool’s lair as Arsenal miss chance to take control
ARSENAL’S Champions League hopes hang in the balance after Liverpool escaped from north London with a 1-1 draw last night (Wednesday). First-half goals from Emmanuel Adebayor and Dirk Kuyt leave the Liverpool with a crucial away goal advantage.
The Gunners travel to Anfield on Tuesday having to score if they are to avoid elimination.
It was a cagey start to this trilogy of meetings between the sides, with the teams meeting again at the Emirates on Saturday in the Premiership.
Arsenal smothered the midfield, while Liverpool crowded out attacking avenues down the wings.
Robin van Persie unlocked the game when his corner was headed in by Adebayor.
The Dutchman took the corner and his perfect delivery was met by Adebayor to open the scoring.
Ashburton Grove rocked – for all of three minutes. Steven Gerrard’s swept cross was deflected in by Gael Clichy’s despairing lunge although Kuyt claimed it as his.
Substitute Theo Walcott set the game alight in the second half. His one-two with Adebayor carved apart the Liverpool defence but his pull-back was just behind Emmanuel Eboue, whose shot dribbled agonisingly to safety.
Next, Alex Hleb waltzed into the box only to be clumsily tugged to the floor by Dirk Kuyt. But referee Vink Pieter waved away the penalty appeals.
Arsenal piled on further attacks but couldn’t get the winner. Now they face their biggest test yet to come out on top.
