Spring swim and croissants
• AS a regular user of the Hampstead mixed and Highgate men’s ponds, I wish to thank the swimmers at Highgate ladies’ pond for their invitation to participate in their Spring Swim between 7am and 8.30am on Sunday, and to share and enjoy their hospitality, coffee and croissants. I was particularly impressed with the unusual weather conditions provided, which contributed an exceptional atmosphere to the occasion, and wonder whether the ladies and their lifeguards will be able to guarantee such an impressive experience every year!
I regret that the posters at the men’s pond promoting this occasion were defaced with a brief comment, hopefully with humorous intent, excluding members of the Hare Krishna sect from participating in this occasion.
The Hampstead and Highgate ponds are facilities enabling members of all faiths and philosophies to enjoy bathing in the natural environment and, although unheated, to do so at the ladies’ and men’s ponds throughout the year.
I therefore hope that members of the Hare Krishna sect or any other racial, religious or social group will not feel offended or excluded by the unfortunate graffiti and, if they so choose, invite and welcome them to share the bathing and social experience unique to the ponds.
