Mausoleum a dead loss
• WHILE £124,000 is being given by English Heritage to restore an 1839 mausoleum in Highgate Cemetery, which houses the dead (Grant to pay for tombs’ restoration, April 3), a living link with the past is under threat at King’s Cross station.
The bridge over platform 8 is to be demolished and the supported great clock there will go too. Its cast iron hands have marked the time accurately since 1893, having survived thus far the various “improvements” there. The clock could remain.
The dead at Highgate don’t need buildings. They should be removed from the ghastly catacombs and buried or cremated. Perhaps English Heritage could offer the railway authority some money to keep the structure and the clock at King’s Cross. The great clock at nearby St Pancras had been destroyed but was reconstructed to grace the span for the future.
Time has ceased for the dead but rules the living.
