Jock’s impressive record in fighting for tenants’ rights
• I READ the obituary of Jock Stallard (A stalwart of socialism and a man of unshakable principle, April 3) with a great deal of interest.
Particularly impressive was his involvement in fighting for tenants’ rights and the campaigning he did “against atrocious housing”; which, as you reported, included an extremely dedicated gathering and submitting of evidence to the council and government and a dogged pursuit of slum landlords.
Well, here we are over 50 years later and the question that has to be asked is how much have things really changed?
At the Camden Federation of Private Tenants (CFPT), which was set up in 1980 to help tenants organise and campaign for their rights, we get phone calls and emails on a daily basis from private tenants who are having to deal with a whole range of problems to do with their home and their landlord. So the answer would appear to be: “not very much”.
These issues are particularly acute among people with assured shorthold tenancies (which is by far the most common tenancy agreement for private renters today).
Are you a tenant concerned by your lack of protection and rights?
Or are you a community group or voluntary organisation that is concerned about the lack of rights for private tenants ?
Are you interested in working with us and our members to campaign for better protection and rights for private tenants? If you are, we would really like to hear from you.
