Save a station?
• I HAVE been concerned about the potential closure of Hampstead police station along with so many other residents of Hampstead, South End Green, Frognal and Fitzjohns and Belsize.
The review of the station is being carried out by the Metropolitan Police Authority.
I read press reports that Boris Johnson, the Conservative candidate for mayor, would chair the MPA if he was elected mayor.
I wrote to Boris Johnson to enquire what he would do about saving Hampstead police station for the community if he was elected mayor.
He replied with his concerns about the proposed closure: “I fear that the result would be a less efficient, less localised and less timely service – police stations are vital community hubs. They will always have a key role to play in communication and relationships between the police and the people they serve.”
He has promised to review proposed police station closures if he is elected. He also added he wants to increase police accountability by getting borough commanders to hold well advertised, public, monthly meetings, and introduce electronic crime mapping, to help the police better
target resources, and give people a more accurate picture of the level of crime in their area.”
The potential police station sale smacks of selling the family jewels.
