Town dig deep to secure promotion

Semi-pro side seal victory over Cheshunt and take another step towards Football Conference

PLAYERS from Kentish Town Football Club were celebrating on Tuesday after winning promotion into the Premier Division of the Spartan South Midlands League.
The semi-professional club, which was formed almost 14 years ago when two parents joined forces to unite a team of youngsters desperate to play football, is now incredibly just five levels away from the Football Conference.
Town are guaranteed promotion after beating Cheshunt Reserves 3-0 on Tuesday in their final game of the season to move six-points clear at the top of the table.
Closest rivals Haringey could pull level on points with the Camden and Islington based club if they win their remaining two games, but they would have to score 12 goals along the way if they are to finish with a better goal-difference and deny Town the championship.
Town would still be promoted as runners-up should Haringey reach their unlikely target.
Although Haringey can still catch Kentish Town, head coach Clement Temile has little doubt that the title race is over. Clement, who recently hit the headlines when he applied for the post as the manager of the Nigerian national team, said after the game: “We believed we could do it and we did. We are champions. We dropped some silly points at the start of the season but the boys have performed excellent and showed great determination to bounce back and win the title.
“Everyone is extremely happy,” He added.
Striker Lee Scott, who is the top scorer in Division One after netting his 34th goal of the season against Cheshunt, was leading the celebrations on Tuesday after the news broke that Haringey had been held to a 2-2 draw against Hoddesdon to effectively hand Town the title.
“I’m over the moon. I’m delighted to finish the season as the top scorer, but for me the most important thing is that the team have won the league and been promoted. We have a lot of good players here, and a great team spirit. Everyone really deserves it.”
Kentish Town were in exceptional form as they coasted past a resilient Cheshunt side. Scott, who lives in Gospel Oak, opened the scoring on the half-hour mark when he raced clear of the defence and coolly slotted the ball home.
Dave Dawson doubled the advantage early in the second-half with a stunning 20-yard strike, before Jonathan Donoghue completed the scoring with his 23rd goal of the campaign.
